Unable to add remote printer - can't open member file error

Hi,

When I try to add a remote printer through SAM using printer ip, getting the following error.

Stderr from this command is
"/usr/sbin/lpadmin: can't open member file".
Unable to add printer "NEW_PRN" because of above error(s).

How to resolve this...?

Thanks in advance
Best wishes,

Ganesh.

Re: Unable to add remote printer - can't open member file error

Please post the entry from the /var/sam/log/samlog file where the lpadmin command is being attempted for the remote printer that you are trying to add.

Thanks,
Sanjay

I have attached the truncated output(last 200 lines) of /var/sam/log/samlog

Re: Unable to add remote printer - can't open member file error

Your problem is that for the "remote printer name" you are using the IP address of the server. You need to know the spooler name on the remote system whether it is another UNIX server or a printserver.

Ganesan,

Your solution can be found in the following thread. - http://forums12.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=864375&admit=109447627+1204182338746+28353475

Check the permissions of /etc/lp and /var/spool/lp directories.

Re: Unable to add remote printer - can't open member file error

issue is u are providing the IP , instead of print queue , following command will work.

/usr/sbin/lpadmin -pIL02_RTS_C2270 -orm10.5.42.13 -orpIL02_RTS_C2270 -mrmodel -v/dev/null -orc -ocmrcmodel -osmrsmodel

Re: Unable to add remote printer - can't open member file error

Hi All,

The problem was improper ownership on /etc/lp and it's subdirectories. It was bin:bin and it should be lp:bin

Now i have added the printer.

Thanks for all your help.

Ganesh.
