Unable to login to the console

I am trying to login as root in the console. it takes the passwd and again comes to login prompt.what can be the problem?

Graphics console or serial ? If serial, the response would be "Login incorrect"

Wrong password..., keyboard in caps-lock...?

Can you login via telnet and su with same password ?

Iam trying in graphic console.
If i give wrong passwd it says login incorrect.If i give right one it tries to login and comes back to login prompt.

I have had such a problem too. It takes some minutes and the prompt returns without error messages. What os release and patch kit are you running?

I am using Tru 64 V5.1 A Rev 1885

Now the system is not booting up.
It will come to single user mode and asks to run fsck because some disks have problem.After fsck when i type command # init 3 it hangs there only.

Hi,

are you using fsck file system or advfs?
advfs can be checked by /sbin/advfs/verfy domain
Try
mount -a
and look into messages and /var/adm/syslog.dated/current

Boot from CD-Rom and use fsck from shell. If it doesn't solve your problem recover filesystem from backup (and use advfs instead)
