Unexpected failure. Password file unchanged.

Excuse me.
HP-UX 11.0.
I can not change the password for root. Earlier such not there was. The command passwd is terminated with message:
Unexpected failure. Password file unchanged.

check the consistency of the password file using
#pwck

revert on the output

Is your system is in trusted mode , if yes the reconvert the system to untrusted mode using tsconvert -r & then try.

pwck is a good start. If there is an invalid entry it will help determine the problem.

Also look for unseen characters:
# cat /etc/passwd |vis

And verify that permissions on /etc/passwd are correct.

Is the system trusted? Look for /tcb. If this directory exists, the system is trusted.
