Unrecognized scsi error following boot on ES45

We just put in a new (to us anyway) ES45 server with a full local bus of 146 GB SCSI disks. During and after boot, we see repeating patterns of CAM/SCSI errors that look like the following.

Dec 11 14:22:24 es45 vmunix: cam_logger: SCSI event packet
Dec 11 14:22:24 es45 vmunix: cam_logger: target 1 lun 0
Dec 11 14:22:24 es45 vmunix: ProbeTarget
Dec 11 14:22:24 es45 vmunix: HIM_PROBE for target 1 lun 0 failed.
Dec 11 14:22:24 es45 vmunix:
Dec 11 14:22:24 es45 vmunix: cam_logger: SCSI event packet
Dec 11 14:22:24 es45 vmunix: cam_logger: bus 3 target 1 lun 0
Dec 11 14:22:24 es45 vmunix: ProbeTarget
Dec 11 14:22:24 es45 vmunix: HIM_PROBE for target 1 lun 0 failed.
Dec 11 14:22:24 es45 vmunix:
Dec 11 14:22:24 es45 vmunix: cam_logger: SCSI event packet
Dec 11 14:22:24 es45 vmunix: cam_logger: bus 3 target 1 lun 0
Dec 11 14:22:24 es45 vmunix: ProbeTarget
Dec 11 14:22:24 es45 vmunix: HIM_PROBE for target 1 lun 0 failed.
Dec 11 14:22:24 es45 vmunix:

I cannot find any reference to the term "HIM_PROBE" on google or anywhere else that I can search. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start in troubleshooting these events?

I know nothing, but if the complaints all
point to "bus 3 target 1 lun 0", then I'd
consider swapping that guy out.

Supported hardware?

I would go back to the vendor claiming it's month guarantee...

Re: Unrecognized scsi error following boot on ES45

I went in and removed the disk at SCSI address Bus 3 Target 1 and the errors stopped. However, I still have not found any answers to the meaning of the string "HIM_PROBE" on either Google or the HP site. Since these are standard HP 146 GB drives (which ARE supported on the ES45), the source of the string is a mystery.

Re: Unrecognized scsi error following boot on ES45

Hi Don,

Are the drives connected to an Adaptec based SCSI card by any chance?

I'll guess that HIM might be referring to Adaptec's Common Hardware Interface Module. (Google for CHIM+SCSI).

Cheers,

Rob

Re: Unrecognized scsi error following boot on ES45

Yes, both SCSI channels (scsi2 and scsi3) are labeled as:
Adaptec AIC-7899 Adapter: H/W Rev 1, Driver Rev 2.274 CHIM V364A5

This appears to nail down the most likely source of the error messages, but it is disturbing that HP does not document the output of the their devices for troubleshooting purposes.

Thanks to all for the help.
