Upgrading HP UNIX from 11.1 to 11.23

Subject: Upgrading HP UNIX 11.1 to 11.23
I am on HP-999 PA RISC. Currently we have 11.1. We want to upgrade to 11.23.
Can upgrade be done in place and in case there are problems in any existing applications,
Can upgrade be rolled back.

I think answer to both questions is yes. But I am not a System Administartor, so just checking.

The overwhelming preference among Forum members it to do a cold install, rather than an upgrade. In either case, an Ignite backup prior to the update/install will provide excellent rollback capability.

By the way, what is a HP-999? I've never heard of such a model number and am not sure it would support 11.23. What does the "model" command return?

There are two types of upgrade
one is cold install & another is update-ux.

You cannot rollback if you don;t have ignite backup.

upgrade is run with upgrade-ux. It is a historically buggy tool. The chances of success are inversely proportional to the complexity of the system. It is not widely known, but some application vendors such as oracle do not support their software on systems that have been updated using update-ux.

If you take an Ignite make_tape_recovery or make_net_recovery (to a NFS share), you absolutely can undo any damage upgrade-ux does to your system by restoring the system to the state it was prior to the upgrade.

Cold install, followed by reinstallation of applications is favored by veteran systems administrators on this forum.

In the interest of full disclosure: I have 11 years experience doing systems administration on HP-UX. Due to the global and local economy, I am not working in IT and my access is limited to a pair of old D class servers running HP-UX 11.23 and a small Linux lab in my home office. In my last job I supported hundreds of RHEL based Linux Servers, hundreds of HP-UX servers ranging from HP-UX 10.20 to 11.31.

I would choose a cold-installation preceded by an Ingite recovery image creation. As Pete noted, an Ignite recovery is your easist roll-back choice.

You don't offer any configuration details. Make sure that your actual model is supported. The installation guide for 11.23 will document that. Read it.

One reason that a cold-install may prove to be the best course is that filesystems on 11.23 require a bit more space than before. A cold-install will allow you to satisfy the requirements without undue effort.

You need to ensure all of your running application in current version will support 11.23 also.
Take a ignite backup of your hp ux 11.11 first.
Do a cold installation of 11.23 and set up all the applications and test.if you find any issues restore the server from old ignite.check the document given by james before you start
