Facts:
- rx4640 system, root disks internal, LVM'd + mirrored
-source OS version: 11iv2 December 2008 patch bundle
- upgrade target OS version: 11iv3 September 2009 media, all 3 DVD's swcopied to a disk depot /data3/hpux
Symptoms:
- when running update-ux -i -s server:/data3/hpux, it stops with:
# update-ux -i -s server:/data3/hpux

NOTE: Interactive mode has started (-i was specified)
The interactive UI will appear after update preparation steps are
complete. This may take several minutes.
NOTE: Software that is selected by default will automatically be marked,
however the interactive UI software selection screens should still be
analyzed to determine if changes to the selections need to be made.
NOTE: Output is logged to '/var/adm/sw/update-ux.log'
* Obtaining some information from the source depot.
* Copying an SD agent from the source depot
* Installing the Update-UX product
Current update-ux version: 11.31.21
Source depot update-ux version: 11.31.21
* Installing the SW-GETTOOLS product
* Configuring the SW-GETTOOLS product
* Installing the SD filesets to be used for the update
* Installing the SWM filesets needed to perform OE update
NOTE: Running swm
NOTE: Output is logged to '/var/opt/swm/swm.log'
/opt/swm/transition/bin/swm oeupdate -s server:/data3/hpux -i
* Starting terminal user interface...

Okay, these are in /opt/swm/transition/lbin, add to /etc/PATH. Then next issue:

Okay, add /opt/swm/transition/TUI to /etc/PATH.
After thesee manual mods, TUI finally started and update-ux proceeded as expected.

Yet another reason not to use update-ux.
It is not good at updating complex systems.
cold install followed by application re-installation is the way to go.

However, I did upgrade another rx4640 little over year ago, that went relatively smoothly. These are not overly complex boxes, so I'm currently keeping fingers crossed.
