Upgrading HPUX

The new versions of Oracle are requiring us to upgrade HPUX from 11.23 v2 to 11.31. My question is, is there and upgrade path that can be performed or should I just rebuild from scratch. I am looking for the best course of action.

I am also being asked to install B.11.31.0809.326a) on my 11.31 servers. From my research, this is an OS upgrade.. is that correct?

Re: Upgrading HPUX

Hi Chris:

In my opinion, if you have a choice, a "cold-install' when transitioning from one major release to another is always desirable.

That said, the 'update' of 11.23 to 11.31 is an option. As always, which ever route you choose, make sure that you have a current Ignite backup in the event that you need it.

For the uplift of 11.31 from one "update" level to another (e.g. to 11.31 update-5), you would use 'update-ux'.

More information is available in the 'update-ux' manpages and certainly in the 11.31 installation guide.

Re: Upgrading HPUX

the choice is yours, but I would suggest reading the relevant Release Notes first.
B.11.31.0809 is the Septembe 2008 release, also known as Update 3.

You could visit the following URL for more information:

Re: Upgrading HPUX

I contemplated this upgrade a while back and determinded that a fresh install would be better in my situation. Some of the file system size requirements have changed and a complete redesign of these would be easier for me than upgrading the old server. You may want to consider that first as it may be a show stopper.

Re: Upgrading HPUX

Hi,

As said, choice is always yours but most suggested way is a "cold install" but little time consuming to configure everything back as it were.

All the time keep an Ignite backup that protect you everytime.

Re: Upgrading HPUX

Shalom,

Cold install works. It is supported by application vendors. If they have a version for the new OS version you are set.

upgrade-ux does not always work.

To go from: 11.23 to 11.31 cold install is the only reliable way to go. Oracle has in several phone conversations made clear to me that they do not support upgrade-ux upgrade on Oracle server systems.

They do support installation of the latest QPK, see further.

You ask:
I am also being asked to install B.11.31.0809.326a) on my 11.31 servers. From my research, this is an OS upgrade.. is that correct?

I do not consider this an OS upgrade. You can achieve the same result (there may be some dispute on this point) by installing the latest QPK for 11.31.

Installing the September 2009 update to 11.31 will lead your system to report after installation the same OS version as a cold install.

The advantage is it doesn't require you to reinstall all your applications anew.

Re: Upgrading HPUX

Hi (again) Chris:

There is a *big* difference between applying a Quality Pack patch bundle versus running an 'update-ux' using newer Operating Environment media. The two methods do *not* yield identical results!

You need to read Duncan's simple statement in this thread:

...and follow Torsten's excellent "experiment" in the same. In particular, compare the date results his sessions show for his 'HPUX11i-OE-MC' bundles.

Re: Upgrading HPUX

i agree, i would imagine its not the same, but Oracle will support the QPKPAK. Upgrading an enterprise env with 10 servers would cost alot of downtime. I just find it disappointing that ORACLE won't fix their end and instead wants you to fix the OS.

Re: Upgrading HPUX

Hi,

I'm planning to upgrade from 11.31 Sep 2010 to 11.31 Sep2011, is there any recommended path?

Should I do a fresh install or will an upgrade work fine?

Thanks

Re: Upgrading HPUX

Take a backup to be safe and use update-ux.

You can also use DRD to create a clone and update the clone. Once finished activate the clone.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.
