Users unable to login

Someone has gone onto one of my HP machines and changed the owner and permissions on my root directory and now users are unable to login. I have gone changes everything back the best I could. Do I have to reboot the machine or is there a service I can stop and restart?

Re: Users unable to login

How are the users attempting to log in? What errors are they getting? What exactly did you change?

You might want to give the 'swverify' command a try. See the man page for details.

Re: Users unable to login

From what I can tell. The users are trying to use SSH with Putty software.
They are stating it shows a login prompt then exits out.
I can login in with root.

Re: Users unable to login

Hi Randy,

if even now with permissions got back users cannot login then the problem could be something more of permissions on root directory. Few questions:

- have you trusted system?
Check the presence of /tcb directory;

- what happens on login phase of users? I mean, they insert the login but couldn't insert the password? Or they cannot insert the login either?

Best regards,
Fabio

Re: Users unable to login

Hello Randy.
Have you checked /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log for any relavant Error messages ?

Also, check /etc/inetd.conf for permission, and services.

Hope This Helps.
