Using BackupExec Agent on HPUX

Is anyone using backupexec on HPUX ? i.e. using remote "beremote" agent on HPUX.

Running into difficulties with it working when trusted password database is enabled.

I have the question into Symantec but just curious if there are any users here in the HPUX forums.

Re: Using BackupExec Agent on HPUX

I have installed it for testing but we aren't doing much with it right now. We use Backup_exec to backup all of our windows servers and were thinking about wrapping HPUX into the mix. I don't use trusted security, so that was not an issue.

I think we'll end up sticking with Dataprotector running on HPUX. I wasn't able to get pre_exec and post_exec scripts (to stop and start oracle, etc...) working using the backup_exec agents.

Re: Using BackupExec Agent on HPUX

Shalom,

Where I am now we use Legato.

In my prior life and employment we were using backupexec for all importtant backups.

It was complex to install and cumbersome at times, but the data we backed up was recoverable.

Its important to not just tune your backups for good write performance, but make possible restores at a reasonable rate. A practice DR drill with backupexec is a good idea.

I am one of the few admins who has been through an actual data loss disaster and we found out that our very fast method for backups to be written resulted in restores being single threaded.

As far as the trusted password database for backupexec, I do not believe we used it.

Tim,

Was you able to get BackupExec working with the trusted pwd database?

I'll be in the same boat here shortly..

Re: Using BackupExec Agent on HPUX

No, we punted on Backupexec and decided to install DataProtector instead.

One major drawback with BE is that it cannot run pre-exec and post-exec scripts on the hpux target. Dataprotector can do this.

That might be ok in some environments but it just wouldn't work for us.

Re: Using BackupExec Agent on HPUX

Bill,

No, this has been out in engineering with Symantec for a number of months now..

Symantec did not seem real interested in fixing it as I was supposidly the only person in the world that was attempting to use their product as an enterprise solution.
I am on their notification list. tick tick.

I am currently using the legacy agent with success, although it is slower and has issue attemting to restore to a different destination. Symantec not interested in fixing this either as it is a "legacy" agent.

Bill,

Here is the link to my issue.

Perhaps if more people log calls about this issue Symantec may address it ?

Re: Using BackupExec Agent on HPUX

Tim,

Thanks for the replies.

When you mention there is an issue restoring to a different destination, is that destination a different directory on the same host or were you trying to restore to a different system?

Sorry, I also meant to ask. Are you using shadowed passwords (/etc/shadow) or the protected password authentication database (/tcb/files/auth/r/root).

We're using the later.
