V4.0G Install- Then won't accept root Password
I am installing Tru64 V4.0G on a DS20E machine. There are two disks, and I
am installing across the two of them.
The installation proceeds OK, and then I rebuild the kernel. When it then
reboots and ask me to login, it will not accept the password that I gave as
part of the initial CD install screen!
Now I am sure that the password is correct...you have to double type it
anyway and it prompts you if you mess it up. So what is going wrong there?
I have tried the complete default installation, with no custom
configuration, and this works, but I end up with a UFS file system, and I
need the AdvFS capabilities on this server.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: V4.0G Install- Then won't accept root Password
Hmmm, you did not somehow manage to boot the wrong disk did you? Bring it down (or up ;-) to the P00>>> prompt and 'show boot*'
Check out 'boot_def_dev' vs 'booted' ?!
boot -fl=0 to stay are single user,
mount -u / (on V5 there is a mountroot script), and poke at /etc/passwd?
then init 3 or ^D to bring up all the way?
fwiw,
hein.

Re: V4.0G Install- Then won't accept root Password
Just guessing here.. maybe there is another disk containing a valid previous installation, and your booting from the wrong disk....
You will have to boot in single user mode to be able to check some data (and to set the root password )
>>> boot -fl s dk'xyz'
#bckeckrc
cd /var/adm/smlogs
The file install.cdf should contain the data that corresponds to your answers during the install. The file install.log has the log of the installation messages.
Check disklabels of other disks and check if they contain valid a-partitons and primary swap partition-b...

Re: V4.0G Install- Then won't accept root Password
Just to say thanks for your ideas.
I resolved the problem by dropping to single-user mode, changing the root password, and then booting back up.
Why this should be necessary I don't know, but it is fixed now.
Thanks!

Re: V4.0G Install- Then won't accept root Password
The installation only changes the editable /etc/passwd
