VM guest query

Hi,

We have fully functional rx6600 server running HP-UX11iv2. This servers hosts dev. environment with oracle and application software. Can we virtualize this server using HPVM without disurbing the current enviornment?
Is it possbile to convert the server as VM host and create another required environment as a VM guests?

The HPVM host should (must) not run applications.
So you may consider to create virtual guests and install the applications there.

Thanks Torsten. I suspect that should be the case. What will be the issue in having applications running on VM Host?
I need this because migrating the currently running applications from stand-alone server to Vm host and creating another virtual partition to host new environment is very difficult time consuming.

According to the manual this is not allowed.

Consider to create an ignite image and restore it to the guest. This may take less than 1 hour.

Hi,

integrity vm do some changes in kernel parameters. so your applications may not work well. as oracle wants to have kernel modifications for it's own, this can be a problem. for other applications it may not.

And since all the disk are already there, you just have to assign them to VM after igniting
and import the volume groups.

All your data is back on your virtualised server.

Hi ,

Only Monitoring software like , glance, gwlm and service guard is recommended to run on HP VM host.

There are procedures to migrate Vpars to VM.

Similar way it must be possible to migrate a stand alone machine also ( I am not sure).

What you will need to do is create a guest and move the current applications to the guest.

This is going to involve some downtime, no way to avoid it.

But what you are wanting to do is have one hardware set run more than one environment.

Some amount of pain is required to get there.

Beats buying a new server, but that might be an option to prepare the new environment.

Hi,

if you want to run another os istance on the same hardware and you want to isolate them. You can use process resource manager(PRM).

No need to disturb environment, and no need to reboot.
