now managed to got it seeing something but only showing no hardware.
obviosly the server is not identifying what it see'e top be able to alocate drivers.
any ideas starting to get to headbanging stage.

If you see NO_HW in ioscan, the device was there, but it isn't any longer.

Did your SAN guys check the library and zoning config?

aparently zoning etc all OK and we have never seen anything apart from NO_HW so i still believe the san is not presenting to unix box in a way that it understands, this is the only possible thing it can be in my mind.
anybody got any further thoughts?

If you see NO_HW it **WAS** visible.

You should use commandview TL and check the library configuration now.
