I am using Suse 9, 10 (sels) and Redhat 4, 5 (rhel).
I can view the all installed packages by running "rpm -qa".
But what i need is i want to know the latest version available for each packages installed in Suse and Redhat.

Re: Want to know the latest version of all packages installed in linux
Start the on-line update tool for your Linux distribution. It will display the available updates, i.e. the packages you *don't* have at the latest version. Anything it does not display *is* currently up to date.
There is usually an option that will just display the packages that would need updating.
For RHEL 4:
up2date -u --dry-run
For RHEL 5:
yum check-update
I'm not too familiar with SuSE/SLES, but I know that the online update functionality in them is likely to be found within the "yast2" universal administration tool.

Re: Want to know the latest version of all packages installed in linux
I am getting following output when ran above commands in SUSE 10.
suse10tst:~ # rug list-updates
Waking up ZMD...Done
No updates are available.
suse10tst:~ # zypper update
Restoring system sources...
Parsing metadata for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP2...
Parsing RPM database...
Summary:
Nothing to do.
So as per above ouptut, is my suse server up-to-date?
or is there any other problem.

When i entered the command in redhat i am getting "Red Hat Network Registration" Screen.
Where it is asking to enter the username / password and email address,
what is this?

This is a prompt from Red Hat Network to Register your system.
Red Hat's License agreement requires you to have paid support arrangements for every RH system you have installed.

"rug list-updates" and/or "zypper update" will check the updates from the "Installation Sources" or "Software repositories" you have configured. By default the only "Installation Source/Repository" is the media from which you have installed the OS(SLE).
My guess is that you haven't configured the online "Installation Sources/Repositories" to your system, thats why "rug list-updates" and "zypper update" reports you "No updates are available". and "Nothing to do".
you should first register your machine with Novell, to get online updates.
