What happen when new kernel not Boot for ITUNIUM

Dear ALL,

I have the action plan for PA RISC (HP-UX 11.11)
if system fail to boot with new kernel.

I have attached the action plan for Itunium Server. Please verify it. If any thing need to modify, please suggest me.

Thanks

Hi ,

i think you have to consider also dlkm module. Be aware you can not move this module via cp but use kmupdate command .

Hi,

Before applying patches or tuning kernel parameter verify your root disk is mirrored.
Boot through secondary and conform.

Remove secondary disk and boot through secondary.

you need to run hpux -lq when your booting through primary disk.

In case after applying patches if your system is not booting you can boot through secondary disk.

Re: What happen when new kernel not Boot for ITUNIUM

Shalom Minhaz,

I think the old action plan is still good.

/stand/vmunix is the new kernel and you can always boot of vmunix.prev and then copy it over vmunix

That part of the boot process is not changed.

There are however gotcha's in this process and you still want an ignite make_tape_recovery or make_net_recovery before you do kernel work or patches.

Minhaz Bhai,

You can proceed with the plan with make_tape.

Re: What happen when new kernel not Boot for ITUNIUM

Dear All,

I am not talking about HP-UX 11.11. My query is: If new kernel not work after rebuilding new kernel in HP-UX 11.23 then what is the steps to roll back to previous kernel. I have the roll procedure for HP-UX 11.11.

Please post steps in detail for HP-UX 11.23

Thanks

Re: What happen when new kernel not Boot for ITUNIUM

Minhaz,

If the default vmunix kernel configuration wonâ t boot, boot from the backup kernel configuration, or any other named kernel configuration.

Booting the backup configuration on Integrity:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
HP-UX Boot Loader for IA64 Revision 1.71
Press Any Key to interrupt Autoboot
\EFI\HPUX\AUTO ==> boot vmunix Escape (interruption of HPUX boot loader)

HPUX> ll
HPUX> boot backup

++++++++++++++++++++++++++
the backup directory is by default persent in /stand. And there is a vmunix files (same size as on primary kernel) which require for boot.

cheers!

Re: What happen when new kernel not Boot for ITUNIUM

Dear Ali Vhai,

Thanks for your post. Steps that you mentioned , i have already know. My query is after booting from backup kernel (HPUX> boot backup) for HP-UX 11.23 how to restore the backup kernel from (/stand/backup/vmunix to /stnad/vmunix) ??

Please help me with this issue ??

Note: "kmupdate" command is not available in HP-UX 11.23 or later

Thanks

Have you looked at kconfig(5), kcmodule(1M) and kconfig(1M)?
