What is "virtualization frame work"? how we can use this for HPVM (HP intergrity server)?

Hi All,

We have one HP integrity server with 16GB physical RAM.

We have installed HP-UX 11iv3 as host OS and installed seven guest OS with each having 2GB memory.

Now I am not able to create new server.

At this situation my manager asked me to use "virtualization frame work" to allocate the resource instead of allocating physical memory directly to guest OS.

My Questions:

1)What is the purpose of "virtualization frame work"?

2)How to check if "virtualization frame work" installed already?


3)If not, How to install "virtualization frame work"?

4)How to check whether the "virtualization frame work" is already being used for memory allocation to guest OS?

5)How to check whether we have allocated the physical memory directly to guest OS?

6)what is the advantage and disadvantage of allocating memory through "virtualization frame work"?

Your manager may be using "buzz words"

If you are running seven systems on HPVM, let me assure you that you already have a virtualization framework or system already installed.

I did see this term used in describing a Xen Virtualization scheme, but Xen will not run on Itanium hardware.

If you have seven running HPVM systems,created by hpvmcreate or hpvmclone command, your host to guest memory allocation is the most efficient HP can deliver.

The only improvement I can think of is upgrading the version number of HPVM to 4.2 the latest available.

Quite an interesting question though.

Possibly your manager is thinking of the "memory overcommit" feature available on some virtualisation systems (VMware in particular), where the total memory assigned to guests can exceed the physical memory on the host, and the hypervisor dynamically reassigns physical memory to guests?

As SEP says, this facility is not available in HPVM.

Hi Steven and Andrew,

My Questions:

1)So if we are having 16GB physical memory and assigned 3GB to host and 2GB to 6 Guests, after that we can not assign the memory new guest, am I correct?

2)Therefore we need to add more physical memory to create more guest OS, am I correct?

Hi Senthil,

To answer your questions -
Guests generally use fixed amount of memory.The memory is allocated when
the VM is started and then it gets locked down so that it cannot be
paged/swapped. some thing like the memory is reserved for the guests.

However, Integrity VM allow you to dunamically modify the memory that a
VM can use. Refer the following link for more details -
