When HP system is booting, fiberchannel device discovery is taking 1 hour to boot.

When, I have rebooted HP server it stuck to


HP Fibre Channel Mass Storage Driver v1.16 (0x1.10)
Fibre Channel: Discovery and Configuration of devices might take several minutes ....

and after one hour it is starting.

Please find attached log in text file. Any help highly appreciated.

Please check if you have a large SAN zoned (many different arrays) and if there are arrays with no LUNs assigned to this server. Check the zoning!

There's a parameter in the EFI boot ROM for most FC cards called EFIScanLevel, (or something like that). This defaults to zero which means that EFI doesn't scan FC devices that aren't listed as one of the servers boot devices. Sometimes people set this to 1 so they can change their SAN boot device, ut after the new boot device is recorded as a boot option it should really e set back to zero to prevent long scan times. That's true I have large zone configuration. But problem resolve after changing HBA card.

Has it always been this way? You may have disk array configuration errors as well as SAN parameter problems. Almost all the major disk array manufacturers have specific (and often incompatible) settings for Windows versus Red Hat versus HP-UX. While the LUNs seems to work OK, severe delays with hardware scans and ioscan can indicate an issue with the settings. Make sure the LUN setup matches the manufacturer's specs for HP-UX. If you can't find HP-UX listed, call the manufacturer directly and don't assume that HP-UX should be like AIX...

Not EFIFCScanLevel, but instead the "Enable World Login" variable is the one that can be set to display all luns behind a certain fc hba. Default, the "Enable World Login" variable is set to [n] (no). If this variable is set to y, f.e. to be able to add as a bootoption, the alternate bootpath of a sanbootdisk, then afterwards, this variable should be set as fast as possible back to [n].

Yes, doesn't it depend on the card model (Emulex OEM'd or Qlogic OEM'd). IIRC they both have different parameter names.

Ive seen, internally in HP, documents that refer to another parametername then "enable world login" to be able to "search fc luns behind a fc hba on "efi level". But Im quite certain, that fc hba, that have a parameter like EFIFCScanLevel, that this parameter always will be referring to displaying the boot order list and never will have anything to do with what "enable world login" does.

NOTE: I also believe that, the parameter "that searches for fc luns in efi" might not always be there because of "firmware" not updated to the latest.

Now the procedure that I wanted to share, but I gave up on when, I couldnt get it to fit in 1 reply, can be found below. ;)

procedure : add the "alternative" bootpath in efi of a sanbootdisk, when the "setboot" command is "unavailable".

situation : A lvm sanbootdisk has its primary bootpath set to hwpath 0/5/1/0/4/0.15.26.0.0.12.6.

The "normal" way to then, add a alternate bootpath "in" "efi", is to boot "up" the system via the sanbootdisks primary path, set the 'alternate bootpath of the setboot command' to the "alternate hwpath of the sanbootdisk" in this case "0/5/1/0/4/1.26.26.0.0.12.6", then reboot the system, halt the system in "efi", "map output" will now "show" the alternate boot path and then add this bootpath as a "boot alternative" .

Offcourse in case the alternate bootpath was not added in the above way and the system doesnt boot anylonger from the "primary" bootpath, i.e. the setboot command cant be used, f.e. because the primary fc hba is faulty, a alternative way need still to exist on how to be able to boot the system via the alternate bootpath, so here comes a way on how to do this.

1. primary bootpath :
