Would like to know the daemon names responsible to generate the log files

Hi All,

Could you please give the daemon names (like syslogd, sendmail, cron) responsible to create following log files.

1)/var/adm/sulog and /var/adm/OLDsulog , what is the daemon?

2)/var/adm/syslog/syslog.log and /var/adm/syslog/OLDsyslog.log, syslogd is responsible, am i correct?

3)/var/adm/rbootd.log -->what is the purpose and which daemon is responsible?

4)/var/adm/shutdownlog or /etc/shutdownlog--> which daemon is responsible?

5)/var/adm/rc.log or /etc/rc.log ---> which daemon is responsible?

6)/var/adm/kc.log --> what is the purpose and which daemon is responsible?

7)/var/adm/wtmp and /var/adm/wtmp.old ---> Is .old file created while restarting the server, which daemon is responsible?

8)/var/adm/btmp and /var/adm/btmp.old ---> Is .old file created while restarting the server, which daemon is responsible?

In most of these cases, there is no true daemon involved.

1) sulog is created/modified by the su command itself and OLDsulog is created by the reboot process.

2) yes, syslogd is the culprit

3) look at "man rbootd"

4) shutdownlog is actually update by the reboot command which is invoked by the shutdown command.

5) man rc

6) I don't have on on 11.11 - what version are you running?

7) man wtmp

8) man btmp

Re: Would like to know the daemon names responsible to generate the log files

Hi Senthil:

A process that creates a log doesn't have to be a 'daemon'. In fact, a UNIX "daemon" is spawned using particular steps with particular objectives in mind. You can begin to appreciate this a bit more if you read (especially the section "Types of daemons" in):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daemon_%28computer_software%29

Regards!

Shalom,

A look at the configuration of syslog.conf will actually help you figure most of these questions out.

I believe most everything in this post will become evident from that.

Here is my additional take:

kc.log
http://docs.hp.com/en/B2355-60105/kmtune.1M.html

rc.log is written by init processes.

rboot
http://docs.hp.com/en/B2355-90692/rbootd.1M.html

Basically, I just punched the log file into a google search.

/var/adm/kc.log site:docs.hp.com

Its all there for you to find.
