X crash

Though I don't often use X windows, it's always my curious tool.
But today, when I try to use it again, it have no respose.

When I type X in command line, an error occurs:
Fatal server error:

====================================
failed to initialize core devices

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages.
Please report problems to your HP support representative.

X server: Unable to open /etc/X11/X0screens file for read/write.
X server: Will try default "/dev/crt"
Failure to open default device file `/dev/crt`.
Please either specify the proper device filename in
your /etc/X11/X0screens file or fix `/dev/crt`. This filename is either
non-existent or is not a character special file.

Fatal server error:

==========================

Some months ago, I even changed file /etc/inittab to
"init:2:initdefault:".
But now I restore it to "init:3:initdefault:".

I'm not familiar with X, so at the moment I have no idea.

Anyone can give me some advice?

Re: X crash

Hi,
what OS are you running?
Has anything since the last time you succesfully ran X?
I would first try to re-run the config tool.
Have the permissions changed on /etc/X11/X0screens ?

Re: X crash

File /etc/X11/X0screens is missing....

I don't understand why /etc/crt is missing too?

Re: X crash

Hi,

If the files are missing, I think you'll need to remove Xserver and re-install it. And after that, install the latests Xserver patches...

Re: X crash

Hi

Did you change anything

could be bad connection with an input device not detected by the xserver

1)mouse or keyboard broken
2)mouse and keyboard on different connector types not both hil or ps2 1 of each is a problem

- Check permission on /dev/crt /etc/X11/X0screens

Re: X crash

Be more attention, I have re-directed the standard output to MP card console terminal, which has some influence on this ?

Re: X crash

I'd suggest :

insf -evd framebuf to recreate the device files.

also see /usr/newconfig/X11/X0screens for a replacent X0screens file and others ....
