about tape driver1

my system is alpha server 4100
and the os is digital unix 4.0D
my tape driver has something wrong
so i place a new tape driver into the same slot of the old one
i executed the command
#tar cv /etc/hosts
#cd /dev
when i #ls -al rmt*
the time stamp of the special file :rmt0h is the same as the time tar command executed
but the other special files of the tape driver
are the same as the time the command #/dev/MAKEDEV tz12

do the time stamps of the tape's special files
change according to the time some commands which operate on the tape are executed ?

Re: about tape driver1

Hi,

I see, that this happens also for tty devices, when you login.
So, why shouldn't this be possible for tapedevices when you write to them.

Is this a problem or is it a matter of curiosity ?

Hi,

yes, you are right. Lets assume, you use rmt1h, then the device file updated its modification time, because you write to it, just like other files and the other rmt1* don't change.
