booting from backup kernel

Hi Admin,

I have a small query on booting with kernel backup.My server is B.11.23 integrity server.

In integrity server to go to single user mode
we have to interrupt the boot, we will get HPUX> prompt and we have to type boot -is vmunix

eg :
HPUX>boot -is vmunix

Actually i had posted the same doubt in my one of the thread.But i got answer that like below..

ISL>hpux -is --->I think this is for PA-RISC servers.

NOw please tell me how to boot my INTEGRITY server with backup kernel.

HPUX>boot /stand/kernekbkp--> is this correct?

You need to get into the EFI Shell. Procedure is here:

select the link for : If you are booting an HP Integrity Server see â Booting HP-UX on HP Integrity Servers: Details and Variationsâ , and look at the section 5-2 and "Booting from an Alternate Kernel File"

and, yes, the "ISL" stuff is all PA-RISC related.

actuaully i use kconfig -s to take the kernel backup.It saves all the kernel parameters in .

Can i boot the server with backup kernel ?

boot /stand/

Is it appropriate way or any other commands used?

Hi,

Booting HP-UX (EFI Shell)
From the EFI Shell environment, boot HP-UX on a device by first accessing the EFI System
Partition (for example fs0:) for the root device, then entering HPUX to initiate the loader.
1. Access the EFI Shell environment for the server on which you want to boot HP-UX.
Log in to the iLO for Integrity and enter CO to choose the system console.
Confirm that you are at the EFI Boot Manager menu (the main EFI menu) when accessing
the console. If you are at another EFI menu, select Exit from the submenus until you return
to the screen with the EFI Boot Manager heading.
From the EFI Boot Manager menu, select EFI Shell to access the EFI Shell environment.
The EFI Shell displays all the files systems and block devices available.
2. At the EFI Shell environment, issue the map command to list all currently mapped bootable
devices.
The bootable file systems of interest typically are listed as fs0:, fs1:, and so on.
3. Access the EFI System Partition (fsX: where X is the file system number) for the device
from which you want to boot HP-UX.
For example, enter fs2: to access the EFI System Partition for the bootable file system
number 2. The EFI Shell prompt changes to reflect the file system currently accessed.
NOTE: The file system number might change each time it is mapped (for example, when
the server boots, or when you issue the map -r command).
4. When accessing the EFI System Partition for the desired boot device, issue the HPUX command
to initiate the HPUX.EFI loader on the device you are accessing.
The full path for the loader is \EFI\HPUX\HPUX.EFI. When initiated, the loader references
the \EFI\HPUX\AUTO file and proceeds to boot HP-UX using the default boot behavior
specified in the AUTO file.
You have 10 seconds to interrupt the automatic booting of the default boot behavior. Pressing
any key during this 10 second period stops the HP-UX boot process and enables you to
interact with the HPUX.EFI loader. To exit the loader (the HPUX> prompt) enter exit
(this returns you to the EFI Shell).
To boot the HP-UX operating system, do not type anything during the 10 second period
given for stopping at the HPUX.EFI loader.

Himacs,
Since you have taken a backup , and want to boot from that kernel.

At HPUX prompt you can use the below command:
(Remember the "backp_kernelname" is the directory name that you specified with kconfig -s command: )

HPUX> boot /stand/backp_kernelname/vmunix

The system automatically saves the currently running configuration to backup immediately before making any requested change to the configuration. in EFI:

hpux -tm

OR,

issue the following command at the HP-UX prompt :

HPUX> boot initial_11iv3
