cannot log into hpux

i have set up a root account and a user account on 11i and cannot get past the log on screen. i enter a valid user and password, the screen goes black with a cursor present and then right back to the logon. in the command line it says the the init is spawning too quickly and no other errors. Anyone have any solutions. Thanks in advance.

Re: cannot log into hpux

Sounds like you may either have a runaway process, or an error in the inittab.

If you can, cycle the system - that may correct the problem

Re: cannot log into hpux

could you possible try to login from the physical system console. If not possible, your only chance may be rebooting the system to see what is causing it.

Also, if you are able to login as another user, go read the /etc/rc.log file to see the reason why you are getting those init is spawning too quickly messages.

Re: cannot log into hpux

What model server?

Go into GSP

GSP> RS

When you see a message that says "...interupt boot cycle 10 seconds..."
hit any key.

ISL> hpux -is (* boot into single user mode

Wait a few minutes for the boot up to -is.

When you have a command prompt check /etc/inittab for errors. Check /etc/rc.log for errors. Check /etc/passwd's root account for /sbin/sh set as the shell, etc.

You may have to set rc.config.d to debug for errors when you step up to run level 2.

# sh - rc.config.d

or

# init 2

init 3 will take you to run level 3.

Re: cannot log into hpux

Hi Kevin,
It could be issue with error in the inittab file
Try boot the server from Maintanance mode and check the inittab file integrity otherwise move the inittab file to inittab.old and copy the /usr/newconfig/inittab to /etc/inittab.

2.May be some nonconfiguration file present in the /etc/rc.config.d. check for any new file entries. also checl the rc.log rc.log.old for any error.

Re: cannot log into hpux

Just a warning about booting into hpux -lm, maint. mode. Never go from run level 1 in hpux -lm to run level three. You may corrupt the O/S file systems. From hpux -lm you can only reboot.

Re: cannot log into hpux

i can log in with the command prompt but not into the gui. everything hangs for a second and then the log on screen comes up again. could a driver for the video card be hanging the system?

Re: cannot log into hpux

First you should log on from the command line and check the name resolution.

If this is working, check

/usr/contrib/bin/X11/dr_dt

Hope this helps!
