Re: configuring virtual IP in hpux

Hi,

$ ifconfig lan0:1 ...
$ ifconfig lan0:2 ...

more information in ifconfig(1M).

I you want to configure them a each boot, add them to file /etc/rc.config.d/netconf

Re: configuring virtual IP in hpux

Since you did not mention the houx version you are running, looking at the single NIC and graphics etc, I am under the impression that you are running a workstation class machine with v 11.11 and below. So, I am taking the running different subnets on a single interface concept totally out.

In this case, first thing you will need to consider, your virtual IP addresses should be in the same network as your primary IP adress.

Having this hurdle out of the way, there are two ways that you can proceed:

1. create temporary virtual IP addresses, which will not come back upon reboot automatically. For this, you run:

ifconfig lan0:1 inet 152.15.X.Y netmask 255.255.0.0 up

that is all there is to it.

2. Create a permanent virtual IP address. For this one you will need to edit your

/etc/rc.config.d/netconf

file, find the stanza defining lan0, copy and paste it to a second and third and so on stanza(s) and modify the interface name to "lan0:1" or "lan0:X" where X is any number, as well as changing the IP address to whatever your heart desires, keeping it in the same subnet. Then you will need to stop and start networking with:

/sbin/init.d/net stop
/sbin/init.d/net start

Make sure you understand, when you stop and restart networking, any sessions connected to this machine, say via, telnet, ssh, ftp or any other way, will drop dead.

Hope this helps
