cpu and memory distribution across cell boards

Hi,

Hp-UX 11iv2
We have an rx8640 server (see par 1) with 1 cell board (8 cores, 32 GB(8 X 4GB DIMMs). We are upgrading par1 with 2 cell boards and 64GB (8 X 8GB) of memory. No additional CPU's. Can we distribute different number of CPu's across cell boards and also can we have diffenent sized DIMMs on the same partition/cell boards?

Eg: Current configuration:
[Cell]
CPU Memory Use
OK/ (GB) Core On
Hardware Actual Deconf/ OK/ Cell Next Par
Location Usage Max Deconf Connected To Capable Boot Num
========== ============ ======= ========= =================== ======= ==== ===
cab0,cell0 Active Core 8/0/8 32.0/0.0 cab0,bay0,chassis0 yes yes 0
cab0,cell1 Active Core 8/0/8 32.0/0.0 cab0,bay0,chassis1 yes yes 1
cab0,cell2 Absent - - - - - -
cab0,cell3 Absent - - - - - -

Can we have the configuration like below after an upgrade:
[Cell]
CPU Memory Use
OK/ (GB) Core On
Hardware Actual Deconf/ OK/ Cell Next Par
Location Usage Max Deconf Connected To Capable Boot Num
========== ============ ======= ========= =================== ======= ==== ===
cab0,cell0 Active Core 8/0/8 32.0/0.0 cab0,bay0,chassis0 yes yes 0
cab0,cell1 Active Core 4/0/8 32.0/0.0 cab0,bay0,chassis1 yes yes 1
cab0,cell2 Active Core 2/0/8 32.0/0.0 cab0,bay0,chassis1 yes yes 1
cab0,cell3 Active Core 2/0/8 32.0/0.0 cab0,bay0,chassis1 yes yes 1

Thanks,
Srini

Re: cpu and memory distribution across cell boards

Shalom Srini,

The only restriction I recall from this class of machine is that memory is paired. That means that 4 GB DIMM cards need to go into a cell or system in sets of two.

If you are pulling memory out, remember to do it in pairs. If you are adding memory, remember to do that in pairs.

I believe based on the information posted you can achieve the desired configuration you posted at the bottom of your original post.

Re: cpu and memory distribution across cell boards

Thanks Steven.
Will there any performance issue when we have unbalanced number of CPU's and DIMM sizes across the cell boards hard partition.
