Re: description of wtmp wtmp wtmps

Hi:

The 'wtmps' file is a newer layout of the to be obsolete 'wtmp' file. If you examine the respective manpages for 'utmp(4)' and 'utmps(4)' you will see that the login name and hostname have been expanded from 8 and 16 characters to 256 characters.

Regards!

Re: description of wtmp wtmp wtmps

The wtmp is a file on Unix-like systems that keeps track of all logins and logouts to the system.

wtmps hold user and accounting information for such commands as last, who, write, and login

The utmpx and wtmpx files are extended database files that have superseded the obsolete utmp and wtmp database files.
The tongue weighs practically nothing, but so few people can hold it
