device-mapper during the kernel upgrade.

How to handle the device-mapper(device-mapper-1.02.07-4.0.RHEL4) during the kernel upgrade

i am planning to upgrade to kernel-smp-2.6.9-67.0.1.EL which is the latest as of now.Also the device mapper will be upgraded to device-mapper-1.02.21-1.el4

Assuming youre just updating packages within the same release (i.e. RHEL4), then there's no issue. The update process is designed to be able to update without issue. Just use 'up2date' if you can, otherwise ensure you using 'rpm -U' for everything other than a kernel.

yes we do the "update" process for all packages. But use -i(install) for the kernel package.

As expected the device-mapper just got updated during the up2date(and kernel upgrade)..nothing special.
