It turns out that since this server is in a Serviceguard cluster I have to access these directories from /export/usr/. It has something to do with the clustering. I signed on to the other node of the cluster and was able to delete the directory I had created. Go figure. Thank you for all of your responses.

This was because of the file system layout on a Serviceguard cluster. Thank you for your replies.
