fbackup issue reading DLT8000 tapes in SDLT drive

I am setting up a new machine RX3600 series running hp-ux11i V2 with SDLT drive and need to read DLTiv tapes from an older machine - DLT8000 series so should be compatible. All appears to go well using fbackup and frestore but it only manages to restore about 300Meg of data before it fails with the following
frecover(2114): read error from input device (I/O error)

frecover(2114): read error from input device (I/O error)

frecover(2113): unable to resync backup media

I have run frestore again with the -N option just to see if it can read the whole tape without restoring any files but it still returns the error so the write to disk is not affecting the performance.
The new machine can write and restore files if I use it on the SDLT tapes so the drive appears to be working correctly and the issue is only when trying to restore from the older tapes. Again the old machine can read and restore its own backups.
Any assistance is gratefully received.

Borrow the old tape drive, and connect it to
the new system (long enough to read the old
tapes)?

Steven, thanks but it is not feasible to borrow the old drive.

Buy (or borrow) another old tape drive?

Have you confirmed that you can actually read the whole tape on the *old* drive attached to the old system? There are such things as bad tapes...

Quantum agreed to replace the tape drive and the new one works perfectly - for info the SDLT drive uses different tape heads when reading older tapes hence the issue was only with the old tapes.
