[free] not real memory

hi,

i'd like to know about my memory.
i add some mémory in my server and what i can see is not "THE" real size.
i should have 12Go but i can see with the command:
# free -t

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 3090512 3070636 19876 0 32492 2957536
-/+ buffers/cache: 80608 3009904
Swap: 2096472 208 2096264
Total: 5186984 3070844 2116140

thank you for any advice about this.

Re: [free] not real memory

A few questions.

1) During system-boot, does all 12GB show up?

2) What distribution are you using?

3) What kernel revision are you using?

Re: [free] not real memory

hi,

at boot, all i could see is 3Go.
it seems that what's the bios could accept...
i'm using centos4 with a 64 bites kernel(i'll tell you tomorrow about the version of it).

it seems that with the 32 bites, with centos, there's aspecial kernel-pae for the high memory...
but i don't know about the 64 bites.

it's strange...!

thank you for your suggestions.

Re: [free] not real memory

If the BIOS can't see more than 3GB, then that's where the issue lies.

So this either means that you have faulty memory, or you'll need to do firmware updates to make sure the BIOS can handle that amount of memory.

Re: [free] not real memory

my server is hp proliant dl385 G1
my bios is already the last one :
A05 01/03/2006

it seems that in the 4 first slots for the one CPU, i added 4x2Go and it see 8Go

lastly, in the 4 same slots, i put 4x1Go and it see only 3Go---> one of my 1Go memory is faulty? perhaps...

in the second slots for the 2nd CPU, i added 4x1Go but it seems that it doesn't work without the CPU since i've got one CPU...

thank.
