No. ftp server is set in file /etc/inetd.conf. And you need to enable ftp in /etc/inetd.conf.

I smell LINUX here by looking at the terminology. If this is actually an hpux question, the answer is yes and no together.

In order to run an ftp server on your machine YES you will need to run an ftp daemon. But NO, you do not have to run the ftpd provided by the operating system installation. You may find many alternative ftp daemons available for hpux, wu-ftp being one and most prominent of them.

Instead of phrasing your question as vaguely as you did, if you can tell what you are trying to do, I am sure you will get more help.

Enabling FTP
-------------
==>Chek /etc/inetd.conf file for the following entry,

#ftp stream tcp6 nowait root /usr/lbin/ftpd ftpd -l

If # is there, remove it for enabling the port and restart the inetd by
#inetd -c

It is not like that,

ftpd is mandatory but it will be running only when you have an active ftp connection.

If you do ps -ef in noramal case you will not be able to find out ftpd.

Once you start ftp from some other manchine to the host, you can see it is there

machine" would be helpful.
