ftp ftp/tcp: unknown service

Just cold installed 11.0 on a HP K210. All users who don't have sys as their primary group cannot use ftp. They get the message "ftp: ftp/tcp: unknown service" What did I forget to do?

Re: ftp ftp/tcp: unknown service

If your using NIS, it's probably due to you having PHCO_18338 loaded. This needs to be replaced by PHCO_20441.

You can also fix it with changes to /etc/nsswitch.conf

Re: ftp ftp/tcp: unknown service

Hi John,
"ftp" is located in path "/usr/bin/ftp" path. Make sure your users "PATH" has /usr/bin & /usr/sbin in it.

Re: ftp ftp/tcp: unknown service

Hmmm, do you have this patch loaded?

I guess the permissions on /etc/services or the ftp executables/daemon could be wrong.

What does your /etc/nsswitch.conf file say (if it exists)?

Re: ftp ftp/tcp: unknown service

All users have same path. Only difference is the primary group of the people who can use FTP and those that can't

Re: ftp ftp/tcp: unknown service

John,

I assume that the problem is an out bound connection

Here's my permissions on ftp:

-r-xr-xr-x 1 bin bin 114688 Apr 22 1999 ftp

Hope that helps.

Re: ftp ftp/tcp: unknown service

One more thing, if you enable logging (ie. ftpd -l in /etc/inetd.conf) We should get additional debugging information in the syslog.log.

Re: ftp ftp/tcp: unknown service

Enable ftp login as Albert pointed out and restart inetd. ie (inetd -c)

Re: ftp ftp/tcp: unknown service

Check permissions on /etc/services:

r-r-r root sys
