help fo boot disk failure recovery
I'm running HP-UX 11i V1. I have 2 boot disques configured in RAID 1. The system Hang during the boot process. After troublshooting I check out that one of the two boot disks dead. So I removed the bad disk and reboot the system in LVM maintance mode (hpux -lm). I tried to activate the root vg (vg00) with no quorum check but the operation did'nt succed. I also try to boot the system with hpux -lq without success(I receive the following Messsage( ALERT LEVE: 12 = Softawre failure) during the system boot.
Could someone help me Please ?
Best Regards.

The above run could "/stand/vmunix" file problem
so you need rever to you /stand/vmunix.prev
ISL> hpux ll /stand
Ls

dr-xr-xr-x 3 2 2 1024 ./

Re: help fo boot disk failure recovery
What type of system is this?
Are you using hardware raid or software raid?
What happened is one of the dangers of setting up a 2 disk boot quorum.
I learned this lesson the hard way myself. Its important to include a third disk in the boot vg00 to avoid this.
You will probably need to boot into recovery mode with OS media and attempt to effect repairs.

Re: help fo boot disk failure recovery
its OK that the mirroring is on LVM. As Johnson has suggested please try booting the system in the LVM maint mode using hpux -lq at the ISL> Prompt
YOu can also try booting the Other Disk also that is primary boot path if that not succceds then using the Alternate Boot Path as follows:
ON the ISL Prompt: Try the following things:
BCH Main Menu>search
BCH Main MEnu>search ipl
Note the Hardware paths as being listed.
like 0/1/0/1.0.0.0 etc
search shows all the Potential boot devices and search ipl shows the Boot Devices that has got a valid ISL in that.
from that list as being displayed try booting from the paths as shown like
Main Menu> boot 0/1/0/1.0.0.0
You can see booting from the other disk as such also and as suggested by Johnson you can also try booting the Alternate Kernel as well as give the O/Ps as appearing on the screen.

Re: help fo boot disk failure recovery
How can I copy the /stand/vmunix.prep in ISL mode ?
When boot in LVM maintenance mode, /stand/vmunix is unavailable.

Re: help fo boot disk failure recovery
ISL> hpux -is /stand/vmunix.prev
then activate the root vg
vgchange -a y vg00
mountall
then copy the vmunix.prev to vmunix
then execute shutdown -ry now
boot the system with quorum override

Re: help fo boot disk failure recovery
Can you please let have all the screen captures of what and all is happening.
YOu can boot the system as earlier suggested using the Other Kernel as well as from the other boot path whatever possible and using the -lq option that shall help booting the system whatever boot path you shall use in the Quorum Override mode.
also can have a look at the following threads as that say that the Dump analysis needs to be done for this error.

Re: help fo boot disk failure recovery
Meanwhile try as suggested:
ISL> hpux ll /stand
from ISL prompt.
Hope this helps!

Torsten.
