how to access console when linux is a vmware guest

Depends on what version of VMWare the host is running.

If it's "VMWare server" edition or higher, open a browser and go to "https://hostname:8333" and from there you can download the console viewer (their are linux and windows clients).

After installing it, you can connect to the VMWare host server (with vmware user or root user) and toggle to the guest server you wish to access.

Can't get to console of VMWare workstation, except via VNC to the host server.
