I am using SUSE9 and RHEL 4. I know that we can create ext2 and ext3.
Ex: # mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda1
# mkfs.ext2 /dev/sda1
Pls answer my following questions:
1) what is the difference beteen "ext2" and "resizerfs"
2) what is the syntax to create "resizerfs" file system.
3) is "resizerfs" created in Linux Native file system (type is 82)?
Solved! Go to Solution.

SolutionThere are large differences. You should take a look to some documentation about each file system.
>>> what is the syntax to create "resizerfs" file system.
First, it must be supported on the kernel and the user commands should be installed. The command is similar for all (thank you VFS):
mkfs -t ext2
mkfs -t ext3
mkfs -t reiserfs
>>> is "resizerfs" created in Linux Native file system (type is 82)?
Yes

Re: how to create "resizefs" in linux
I think RHEL 4 never supported reiserfs by default.

Re: how to create "resizefs" in linux
reiserfs is not included in RHEL and certainly not supported.

Re: how to create "resizefs" in linux
The ext3 or third extended filesystem is a journalled fS. Most of the Linux dist. uses this as default FS.
ReiserFS
It is based on fast balanced trees which are more robust in their performance, and are a more sophisticated algorithmic foundation for a fs.
ReiserFS is more space efficient.
Ex: If you write 100 byte files, we pack many of them into one block. Other file systems put each of them into their own block. We don├в t have fixed space allocation for inodes. That saves 6% of your disk.
Features of ext3 & Reiserfs
1) Journal Data Writeback
2) Journal Data Ordered
3) Journal Data

Re: how to create "resizefs" in linux
i think there is no fs like resizerfs. In redhat linux there is a command called resize2fs this cmd is used to resize the file system size.
