how to extend the VG of a resized Disk device

Hi,
I have increased the size of the LUN from 200G to 300G, which is reflected correctly on the disk device as 300GB.

But, when I list the VG, vg02 is still showing 8M Free out of 204768M. How do I extend the VG to reuse the same disk device; but resize to 300GB (for increasing the LV, mounted filesystem eventually).

ps:HP-UX 11.11 on N-4000 server.
Thanks!
Ravi.

Hi,

I'm not sure but I think you should vgexport and vgimport vg02 in order to reflect the new LUN size.

Re: how to extend the VG of a resized Disk device

Then i suppose the only way is re-create the vg (altough i think you wouldn't do this, check the next procedure):

- Backup the data within this vg
- lvremove all lv's from vg02
- vgchange -a n vg02
- vgexport vg02
- pvcreate the disk
- mkdir /dev/vg02
- mknod /dev/vg02/group c 64 0x020000
- vgcreate -s 256 -e 1200 vg02 /dev/dsk/cXtYdZ
- lvcreate all the previous backed up lv's
- newfs and mount'em
- Restore

And that's it.

Re: how to extend the VG of a resized Disk device

HP-UX 11.11 does not have the capability that you are looking and hoping for. That is PV size increase after dynamic LUN expansion. So the only method to use the new sized LUN is to save your data, recreate your VG/LV and restore your data as Andres mentioned above.

In 11.23 and 11.31 the vgmodify command is available to do what you expected.

Re: how to extend the VG of a resized Disk device

This is only possible in 11.23 and 11.31 using vgmodify

http://docs.hp.com/en/vgmodify/vgmodify_wp_modified_final.pdf

and in addition with LVM 2.x volumes in 11.31 (automagically).

In 11.11 you can only re-create the physical volume.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: how to extend the VG of a resized Disk device

Hi

Why u go on to increase the size of the LUN assigned to a serevr already specially when this is an HP-UNIX Box?

u can always create LUNs in the storage new as desired to put the space on the VG, and assign to the server and ioscan and vgextend the VG which u want to increse the Size and do lvextend and lvcreate as desired.
