it must install software

You should! While not proprietary to HP-UX, and while not offered by HP in its packaging of other open-source software (e.g. via the Internet Express bundles), 'lsof' is offered by the HP-UX Porting Center. As such, 'lsof' is installed with 'swinstall' just like standard HP-UX software. This enables you to cleanly uninstall it with 'swremove' should you desire. Of course, this means the 'lsof' will be visable, when installed, in any standard 'swlist' output. Fetch it from here:
