inod-sz seems full

Hi all,

Relatively HP-UX newbie here. I have just run a sar –v 5 5 and noticed the following: -

08:02:02 text-sz ov proc-sz ov inod-sz ov file-sz ov
08:02:07 N/A N/A 83/276 0 486/486 0 882/930 0
08:02:12 N/A N/A 83/276 0 486/486 0 882/930 0
08:02:17 N/A N/A 83/276 0 486/486 0 882/930 0
08:02:22 N/A N/A 83/276 0 486/486 0 882/930 0
08:02:27 N/A N/A 83/276 0 486/486 0 882/930 0

To my knowledge, that’s telling me that I’m out of inodes but I’m still able to create new files. Am I completely reading this incorrectly?

Cross check from my testbox:

/root barolo1 # sar -v 5 5

HP-UX uxtest1 B.11.23 U ia64 08/14/09

09:15:12 text-sz ov proc-sz ov inod-sz ov file-sz ov
09:15:17 N/A N/A 189/4200 0 1121/173600 0 3167/65536 0
09:15:22 N/A N/A 188/4200 0 1118/173600 0 3159/65536 0
09:15:27 N/A N/A 188/4200 0 1118/173600 0 3160/65536 0
09:15:32 N/A N/A 188/4200 0 1118/173600 0 3159/65536 0
09:15:37 N/A N/A 188/4200 0 1118/173600 0 3159/65536 0

Your output shows that your inode cache is at maximum value but did not have any overflows.

Re: inod-sz seems full

Thank you for your prompt reply svo. What is the risk of inode cache being at maximum. Would you recommend that it be increased and if so, whats the best practice to increase it to?

Re: inod-sz seems full

I forgot to mention that this is a normal behavior, the OS tries to keep it at the maximum for performance reasons - usually you will have values of 99-100%.

Only as you can see on my lazy testbox it will not be used at maximum.

hi,

check df -i to check the inode status.
