The SCAN state means that a previous copy of ioscan has started querying all the hardware but is stuck on the listed device. This technique (ioscan -fnCdisk followed by ioscan -knfCdisk) is the fastest way to find the failing I/O devices. The -k option always completes (immediately) because it is reading in-memory tables rather than polling each device.

We had once an issue that rmsf commands lock /dev/config file and all ioscan hangs after that. We can't use vi,glance also because of locked /dev/config. The reboot was the solution.
