Solution
Online JFS is not required to convert a system to largefiles.
The fsadm utility, which gets additional functionality under OnlineJFS is used to convert the filesystem.
Thats why the confustion. If you look at a system without OnlineJFS, you will see that the fsadm tool exists and has the necessary functionality to convert a filesystem.

Re: largefiles clarification
large file is not default for hfs/vxfs filesytem.
You can change to largefile system by command:
#umount /dev/vgxx/lvolx /mount_point
#fsadm -F vxfs/hfs -o largefiles /dev/vgxx/lvolx
HMT
