login incorrect
We're currently experiencing a problem where some users are unable to login into the system whilst others have no problems. There seems to be no pattern to this. Those unable to login get the message "login incorrect".
We're running Tru64 4.0F of an AS 4100 machine
Any light/suggestions/ideas/possible solutions anyone can shed on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Dave.

Re: login incorrect
Are the passwords correct?
Have you reset a password and tried then?
What happens if you do su - user from user root?
Please run a chkpwd and check the shell entries in passwd.
greetings,
Michael

Re: login incorrect
1) we're using Enhanced Security
2) we ran an autochk and got the following message on all the usernames of people unable to login: "
For some reason, the system isn't picking up those users. We compared the user files for some of those users who were logging on and others that weren't able to and could find no differences.
Again any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: login incorrect
Thanks for your response.
To answer you:
1) yes the passwords are correct. Many of the users who can no longer login had logged in successfully earlier in the day.
2) When we attempt to reset a password we get: "Unknown user"
3) When we do an su - user we get: "unknown user"
4) We don't have the chkpwd command.
In addition, we're using Enhanced Security so the entries aren't the passwd file. Each user has a separate file in the folder /etc/auth.

Re: login incorrect
The command to check the passwd file integrity is 'pwck'.

Re: login incorrect
We created a new user using a customised UNIX script that is always used for that purpose. The script apparently updated the user files and corrected whatever problem existed.
Thanks to all for their suggestions.
