starting with datavg which includes disks c4t0d0 and c4t2d0. datalv is a logical volume using both disks. I then want to add 2 more disks for mirroring.
pvcreate -f /dev/rdsk/c7t0d0
pvcreate -f /dev/rdsk/c7t2d0
vgextend datavg /dev/dsk/c7t0d0 /dev/dsk/c7t2d0
lvextend -m 1 /dev/datavg/datalv /dev/dsk/c7t0d0 /dev/dsk/c7t2d0
it takes awhile to run then i'm getting the error:
lvextend: Couldn't re-synchronize stale partitions of the logical volume:
I/O error
lvextend: Couldn't resynchronize logical volume "/dev/datavg/datalv"
any hints on what might be happening? I'm on HP-UX 11i
Thank you - Jeremy

Re: lvextend -m 1 from 2 disks to 2 disks
mirror/ux as I last recall sets the maximum number of mirrors as 2.
There for you can't take an already mirrored logical volume and mirror it to another mirror set directly.
You can lvextend -m 2, designate the new mirror disk, then break the mirror and mirror the newly independent set, accomplishing your goal in three steps not one.

Do you have Stale on lvol datalv??
Post the output of the command:
/usr/sbin/lvdisplay -v /dev/datavg/datalv| grep -i -e "lv name" -e "lv status" -e stale -e '?'
Good Luck!!

Re: lvextend -m 1 from 2 disks to 2 disks
can you please attach the screen capture in putty the O/Ps of the following commands?
#vgdisplay -v datavg
#lvdisplay -v for all the LVs in the VG /dev/datavg
perhaps need to check something with the allocation policies of the LVs and the distribution of the LV Extents on the PVs.
regards

SolutionIt looks your primary copy of datalv has i/o errors somewhere. Just check the consistency of the datalv before try to mirror.
# dd if=/dev/datavg/rdatalv of=/dev/null bs=1024k
It should return without any errors. If found errors, the only way is recreate the lv and restore the data from backup. After that only you can mirror it.

Re: lvextend -m 1 from 2 disks to 2 disks
After looking at everything and running the dd it appears that I had a bad drive. Drive replaced and mirror is intact.
Thank you all again - Jeremy
