migrate oracle from 11.23 ia to 11.31 ia

Hi All, Greetings.

I am researching how to migrate several oracle 9i, 10g, 11g databases from hp-ux 11.23 ia servers (vpars) to 11.31 ia servers (i2 blade). I found this HP forum link http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Databases/Oracle-database-migration-between-11-23-and-11-31/m-p/4470893#M38945 ; which mentioned to migrate oracle by presenting the lun's to the new 11.31 server and startup databases. No reinstall or relink needed.

Can you please help me with the following questions from my dba regarding this migration task?

1. there are couple oracle files in /var and etc directories, do they need to copy over?

2. What about oracle patch levels on the 11.31 server?

3. Is there any risk that the data files might get corrupted after oracle startup on the 11.31 server?

Can you please help and let me know your suggestions on this? Thank you.

Shalom,

You can follow the following path:

1) create new vpar 11.31 and set up access to the oracle disks, which hopefully are on SAN or NFS.

2) Complete all preparation steps required by Oracle, patching and such.

3) Install Oracle on the new 11.31 host

4) Bring down the database on the 11.23 host.

5) Bring up the database on the 11.31 host.

You will need the entries from /etc/oratab

As var as /var goes, depends what is sitting there.

Question 2 of yours: You need to check the Oracle metalink site and install all necessary OS patches they list and dependencies.

Question 3 of yours: Yes. You need a full cold backup.

Thanks for helpful information. The 11.31 servers are on blades bl860c i2 (they are not vpars).

I plan to present the oracle binary directory /u01 (on a san disk LUN) from 11.23 server to 11.31 server. Do I still need to reinstall oracle 9, 10, 11 binary on the 11.31 servers?

The reinstall oracle 10g, 11g binary takes long time. Also Oracle doesn't support 9i databases any more. It will be too challenging and time consuming(for my dba team) to install oracle 9i on new servers. We hope NOT to reinstall oracle binary on the new 11.31 servers. What do you think?

You should not need to install old version oracle versions the new server.

If the (version) gap is too large you might want to do a 'quick' upgrade to an intermediate level on the old server.

You should rely first and foremost on Oracle information, and hpux only secondarily.

As such you should already have mentioned and studied:

You can upgrade os from 11.23 to 11.31 with update-ux for oracle 10.x & 11.x.
And start the oracle on vpar mode. It should start. I have done similar activities where oracle din't make any issue after upgrade to 11.31.
After that, you can have ignite backup & get it restored on i2 blade.

Hi Hein,
Thanks for the oracle doc. We are upgrading the HP-UX OE and hardware, but not the Oracle versions at this migrate. Each databases will keep their own versions.

Thanks for the reply. I am not using update-ux to upgrade OE 11.23 to 11.31 on the same vpar box. I have already cold installed OE 11.31 on a new blade server box; and now I need to migrade the oracle databases from the old 11.23 box to the new 11.31 box.
