need to extend / for upgrade

I need to upgrade from 11.11 to 11.23. I'm curious if / really needs to be increase from its current 200 MB to 429 MB as recommended by the upgrade manual for a cold install. I want to do a warm update to hopefully reduce my down time. I use the system for a 3rd party database that operates 24/7. My install is FOE on a RISC rp2405.

Re: need to extend / for upgrade

Hi James,

200 MB may be a little too less.

The most safe way to extend it is doing an ignite backup and adjust sizes during restore.

Anyway, I would consider a cold install anyway for several reasons.

If you try an upgrade, make sure to have a good backup for fallback.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: need to extend / for upgrade

i think for extend / (root filesystem) is impossible in hp-ux.

Re: need to extend / for upgrade

impossible is almost nothing, but better to use ignite.

Re: need to extend / for upgrade

Hi James,

As everyone said ignite backup and restore is the preferred and supported way to extend the root filesystem. Take ignite backup with -I option for interactive restore.

#make_tape_backup -Av -I

Make sure that you have enough free PE's on root VG to extend the filesystems.

Also read that document to know the recommanded filesystem sizes for upgradation.
Best wishes,

Ganesh.

Re: need to extend / for upgrade

Thank You all. It appears the right way is to use Ignite. I have plenty of room on vg00.

Best regards,
Jim
