pax on itanium to replace fbackup
I am running HP-UX 11.31 on an rx2600. The thought of loosing fbackup really disturbs me but there is no way i am going to purchase Data Protector. So I am stuck with Pax.
By looking at the man pages and other forum threads i figured out how to write to a tape and xtract from the tape but i am confused on how to just read the tape and display its contents. I would like to be able to read the tapes to make sure that they are good.
I also heard that at the later releases the option to boot from an Ignite tape is back. Is this true? It sure was nice to just create an Ignite tape and boot from it when you needed to recover the system.
Any Help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim

This has actually been true of some Itanium systems for a while now, depending on the model and firmware levels.
As far as pax goes.....try using '-v' option to pax. I'm not at a system at the moment, so I can't experiment, but I think that should do the trick for you.
I agree with many others that fbackup/frecover will be sorely missed.

Re: pax on itanium to replace fbackup
For 11.41, unless you want to start practicing now.
>I am confused on how to just read the tape and display its contents.
You simply don't use -w or -r, -v is optional:
pax -f file -v
Make sure you install the latest pax patch and PAX-ENH. Then when you write use "-x pax".

Re: pax on itanium to replace fbackup
I will work on the Ignite and Pax issue and see how I can make it work for my application.
Thanks again!
