purpose of /etc/default/fs

I opened this file. it shows that

# vi /etc/default/fs

LOCAL=vxfs


Pls explain me what is the purpose of this file.

In case you don't specify it a filesystem will in this case default to vxfs which is a trimmed down licensed version of Veritas Journal ed File System.

when you are creating a new filesystem if you do not provide any fstype default fstype specified in the /etc/default/fs will be used.

yes right.

It is used by more than the newfs command. It is also used my the mkfs, fsck and fsadm command and any other command that uses the "-F" option. Same idea, if you don't supply the "-F" option on the command line the fs type is this file is assumed.

in this directory file type is mentioned that will be default, if some one did not mentione the fs type while running the command like newfs etc. there it will take default vxfs,

Hi Senthil,

Purpose of /etc/default/fs is

default file system defined at /etc/default/fs.

It means, when you are creating a new filesystem if you do not provide any fstype default fstype specified in the /etc/default/fs will be used.
