questions about adding a new drive to HP9000

Hi,

I have an rp7410 test machine where I added a 2nd disk that I'll be setting up in a mirror later on.

when doing a diskinfo -v on the *new* and *existing* disk I notice some differences :

old :
bytes per sector: 512ce required
rev level: HPC3v/rdsk/c3t6d0 | more

new :
bytes per sector: 512
rev level: HPC7

My 2 questions :

Should the firmware be the same (Someone told me once firmware inconsistencies can cause trouble ?)

What does the *ce required* means for the new disk in the block size question ?

thx a bunch !

Re: questions about adding a new drive to HP9000

Consider this:

Different disks may have same capacity, but different model = different firmware.

Hope this helps!

The *ce required* means the same thing that the *v/rdsk/c3t6d0 | more* means for the rev level. They are both garbage text left from a previous screen write. You must have some kind of a tty setting that is wrong when you checked the old disk. Sometimes when you use the console you get that when you first login. After one or two screenfuls it gets scrolled up and goes away.

Re: questions about adding a new drive to HP9000

The previous message most likely was:

"diskinfo: Character device required"

"ce required" was left over as garbage.

BTW, "ioscan" will likely tell you the disk model.

Hope this helps!

Re: questions about adding a new drive to HP9000

Benjamin,

If this is hardware mirror, you want to have the same capacity ( size ) to mirror your disks and preferible the same firmware.

If this is software mirror with Mirrox-UX, then you could use different size drives given that you are mirroing logical volumes and or different firmware; the software does not care for it.

Re: questions about adding a new drive to HP9000

About the *ce required* ... I was connected via the console of the rp7410 over the network.
So probably my tty was f*** up :p, maybe i forgot to do TERM=vt100 export TERM ...

About the firmwares... I Indeed intend to set it up with MIRROR-UX.

I ordered the same disk with the same spare parts number, but the firmware is not the same, actually the brand isnt either...

I guess I don't have to worry about this then.
