"rpm -qa" does not return any output.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 4)

Linux hostname 2.6.9-42.ELsmp #1 SMP Wed Jul 12 23:27:17 EDT 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

any fix??

yes. that did not help.

file /var/lib/rpm/Packages was zipped by error and which caused the problem.

That particular file is part of the rpm package itself.

Check the integrity of the package:

# rpm -V rpm


If you have any output of that command, resintall the rpm package using --force --replacefiles.
