read permissions

Hello Managers,
We stomped at a contradictory issue.
we have users who own a directory and allow the rest of their group members to see their files as set with the read permissions.

Well, some users can not see the contents of this directory unless we change the permission to x *execute* even though the read permission is set for the group.

Is this very common?

Re: read permissions

Yes, normally for a directory, you should enable both permissions.

The r indicates that you can list a file in the directory.

The x indicates that you can access to the directory or file in the directory.
