remsh from HPUX is ok, but rlogin does not work
Hello,
from HP-UX i cannot connect via rlogin without a password to my Redhat?s.
But remsh is running without problems, so i think .rhosts-file is OK.
Is there any Trick ?
best regards

Re: remsh from HPUX is ok, but rlogin does not work
telnet from Linux to HP:
telnet HP
who -Rm >> shortname
Whatever it returns is the name that needs to be used in the rhosts.
file of HP. >> shortname is what is in the .rhosts of HP
from HP telnet to Linux:
telnet Linux
who -Rm >> FQHN
Whatever it returns is the name that needs to be used in the rhosts.
file on Linux. >>> shortname is in .rhosts file... Change that to FQHN
This is what works HP to HP.

Re: remsh from HPUX is ok, but rlogin does not work
Hermann,
What Berlene indicates is true for HP to HP. However, Linux incorporates and additional level of security, called PAM.
Your Linux box should have documentation included in it in the /usr/doc/pam-0.72 directory tree. (Your version may vary).
In the short of it all, look in the /etc/pam.d/rlogin this file contains the various tests for the rlogin proceedure.
You may want to compare the attached configuration file with one that is on your machine for the differences. This one may work for you.
Hope this helps you.

Default you can't ( and shouldn't ) direct login as root from a network connection.
