Re: replace old 2473c disk with a "newer" 2490A

Shalom,

How do you do it?

You don't.

I seriously doubt that an HP-UX 8.0 system will be able to boot off or understand a disk of that size or a disk that is not certified for the OS.

Better to go out in ebay and find a disk that is certified for HP-UX 8.0. If you can't find a disk, maybe you can find system.

Re: replace old 2473c disk with a "newer" 2490A

As Steven mentions, HP-UX 8.0 will not recognize or be able to use any new disk. All the disks that can be used by 8.0 were obsolete more than 10 years ago. You can certainly play with the new disk and see what HP-UX will do with it. But as for instructions, the disk sectioning that is hardcoded into the driver has no provision for newer disks. You might luck out using section 2 (the whole disk) but you will be a pioneer, going where almost no sysadmin has gone before...

Re: replace old 2473c disk with a "newer" 2490A

hi,

The C2473C is am old disk of 677mb and the newer, but still old C2490A is a 2gb disk.

one problem you may encounter is that the C2490A disks came in both FWD scsi and SE scsi interfaces, depending upon the options on the disk. You need the SE scsi version to stand any chance what so ever.

I dont go back as far as 8.0, but Do know that even with 9.0x you had to manually add the disk tab entry for disks that hpux didnt recognise correctly or use a similar one. Id be pretty sure that you wont find an entry anywhere near the 2gb needed in the disktab file.

So to add this you need to know all the geometry of the disk and do some maths to work out the required information. Then it may not work either?

I know its not what you want to here, but you would be better trying to get a disk the same, from the used market.

Re: replace old 2473c disk with a "newer" 2490A

Thanks to all.
I already bougth an used 2473 disk, they are very reliable, but due to their age, life expectancy is low.
I have some spare Hp9000 with nearly unused 2490A disk.
I need info on how to add a entry manually to the SAM files so the system can recognize the disk(even with reduced capacity)
The info of the disk is attached

Re: replace old 2473c disk with a "newer" 2490A

hi,

I dont have a system to hand at the moment, but heres one from google, taken from a 9.04 system

http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.hp.hpux/tree/browse_frm/month/1994-09/a9daa8a09a131f06?rnum=131&_done=%2Fgroup%2Fcomp.sys.hp.hpux%2Fbrowse_frm%2Fmonth%2F1994-09%3F#doc_72ef51ff65e7068e

HPUX 9.04 has one in there already.....

Re: replace old 2473c disk with a "newer" 2490A

Shalom,

I have some spare Hp9000 with nearly unused 2490A disk.

Don't be surprised or upset if one or two of these things don't spin up. Hard drives last much longer sitting in one place, with good temperature control, spinning.

I still haven't solved the problem, but i don`t have much time now to experiment. I will keep trying on my free time.
