i know i can create it and there is no iissue with that but wondered what the thinking from HP might have been to not have it in the default build as with 11.11.

SolutionFor years HP-UX shipped with no /etc/nsswitch.conf file, but a couple of candidates sitting in /etc
cd /etc
ll resolv.*
I am betting there are a few candidates you can pick one for production.
Otherwise write a simple one. Pull it off another HP-UX system.
It is the HP way.
HP-UX is still an industrial strength, rocking OS.

Re: resolv.conf missing
I have ALWAYS had to set up my resolv.conf by hand. The exception might have been if I set up the DNS servers on the appropriate screen during installation.
There is really no way to have any sort of default for a resolv.conf file. This contains **YOUR** DNS servers. How can HP know that?

Re: resolv.conf missing
It is put there either by manually creating the file, or at installation time supplying the additional networking iinformation, which includes DNS servers.

Re: resolv.conf missing
A missing '/etc/resolv.conf'?. The contents are quite simple and wholly dependent upon your needs. A skeletal one is usually setup during a cold-install. Maybe that changed in 11.31, but I'm not sure.

Re: resolv.conf missing
What would the default resolv.conf contain?
Since it is totally dependent on the local environment, whatever it might contain, it would always be wrong. Perhaps you have seen it when you initially setup a system and questions about DNS were asked up front. In that case, resolv.conf will then be created.
